The woodland is enchanting, a beautiful location

The camp is situated in 200 acres of private woodland, and beyond that, wonderful farming countryside with rivers and rolling hills. Eliminate your worries in the clean fresh air and the wonder of the trees.

Woodland weather

When it rains it’s a little drier, when it’s cold it’s a little warmer, when it’s blowing, it’s a little more sheltered, the magic of the woodland is ever changing. One moment silent, another, full of noise with wind in the trees or the sound of birdsong. When it does rain, which is not often compared to most parts of the UK, the camp takes on a "wartime spirit" with friendships formed over tea and cake in the lobby tent.

Full of magic and mystery the woodland stands on the edge of the battlefield site of Stamford Bridge in 1066, the successful last battle of King Harold before his defeat at Hastings. Read more about the battle on the Battlefields Trust website. The woodland is part of an estate that has existed since Saxon times.

Wildlife and the working countryside

The wildlife here is good and if you’re lucky enough you will catch sight of foxes, hares, badgers, deer and buzzards. Closer to the nearby river Derwent there are otters, kingfishers and herons. We manage the site to enhance wildlife and flora. It is a working woodland and outside of the 15 acre camping area the woodland is managed for timber and pheasant game. (We post in advance when we are notified of any such activity in the wider woodland). Pheasant beating in the woodland for the shoot only occurs 12 days a year. There are times when certain areas have restricted access due to woodland management activities and there is one private residence in the woodland whose privacy we respect. The woodland is close to the Howardian Hills area of outstanding natural beauty.
