Tired and stressed by the pace of urban life the Van Outersterps dream was to set up an eco-chic “glamping” business, which would nurture their own family life and support tourism in idyllic North Yorkshire. Jollydays was born in 2008 and was an immediate, runaway success; it has led the glamping revolution and helped transform our experience of the great British outdoors.
The camp attracts many people; couples, groups, families, reunions, walkers, non campers, and the young and old. If you just want to escape and get away from it all, have a reunion, bring a corporate group and boost moral within the team, or celebrate a special event (or just life), Jollydays offers all this in a beautiful location.
The tents are set over 15 acres of the 200 acre woodland. No tents are closer than 15 metres to each other and many much further than that. Being in a quiet woodland you can expect to hear the murmur of voices, occasional laughter and the natural wildlife, all adding to the feeling of escaping life.
The site has no permanent structures, and other than the odd wooden pole (and the buried bio digester dealing with effluent off-grid) nothing is attached into the ground, ensuring we tread lightly. We have up to 22 tents at present: 7 Deluxe tents, 8 Luxury lodge tents, 5 Bell tents and 2 Superior bells. We use minimal electricity and an increasing proportion of our energy usage is sustainable. We do however use LPG gas to heat water (which is more energy efficient than electricity). Spent water is sent to a bio digester or reed beds and then released into the ground on site. Jollydays is a member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme, the only certification scheme validated by Visit Britain, through the International Centre for Responsible Tourism. 10% of net profits are given to environmental and educational causes.
Jollydays was set up by Christian and Carolyn Van Outersterp (trained in fashion and landscape architecture respectively). They were previously “darlings of the design world” and are renowned for redefining the contemporary fireplace and transforming the industry. They were awarded a coveted Prince’s medal for design by H.R.H. Prince Charles and their iconic firebowl was exhibited in the V&A. Carolyn and Christian also founded CVO Firevault, their award winning London showroom and restaurant bar. Dubbed “one of London's ten best kept secrets” by Time Out and “a triumph” by Harpers and Queen, Firevault became a popular part of the London scene and a discreet celebrity haunt.
Glamping... what’s it all about?
Glamping, cool camping - call it what you will it’s a million miles away from the nasty nylon tents and inadequate bed rolls we grew up with! Jollydays has shown the UK another way to camp, huge vintage style lodge tents with 4 poster beds, log burners, kitchens, loos and even roll top baths - a genteel introduction to the great outdoors. Because we offer “Britain’s finest camping experience” (Janey Lee Grace, bestselling writer and radio 2 DJ) we’ve learned a lot over the years and we use the customers feedback to improve, update and add to the experience. However the principles remain the same - a comfortable, outdoor break, unfettered by electronica allowing you to escape, relax and enjoy the magic of nature.
Glamping - what it’s not!
Luxury is a very subjective word and when we use it alongside camping we mean - constant hot water, comfy beds (with bedding already in place) toasty wood burners, candles and delicious food delivered straight to your tent. What we don’t mean are marble bathrooms and gold taps, central heating, ipod docks, bell boys, state of the art lighting, tarmac roads and floodlit car parking. It’s not even close to a hotel, the woodland is wild and natural and the soundtrack is birdsong and the starry nights can be breathtaking.
